ENGLEWOOD, CO (March 21, 2012) – The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons has granted its Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) to a select group of 106 currently-accredited and newly-accredited cancer programs across the United States that were surveyed in 2011.The Penrose Cancer Center, part of the statewide Centura Health Cancer Network, is the only program to receive this award in Colorado.
Established in 2004, the Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. A facility receives the OAA following an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the facility demonstrates a commendation level of compliance with seven standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program and also receives a compliance rating for 29 other standards.
“We are extremely proud and honored to have received this award with 100 percent commendation,” said Dennis Bruens, Penrose Cancer Center director. “It is a great testament to the hard work our staff puts in every day to deliver high-quality care and continually develop new programs.”
The seven standards that form the basis of the OAA criteria are drawn from the following six areas of program activity:
· Cancer committee leadership
· Cancer data management
· Clinical management
· Community outreach
· Quality improvement
Cancer patients’ data are reported by each CoC-accredited cancer program to the CoC’s National Cancer Data Base (NCDB), a joint program with the American Cancer Society. These data account for approximately two-thirds of all newly diagnosed cancer cases in the U.S. each year, and are used regularly to monitor the quality of patient care delivered in CoC-accredited cancer programs and to improve cancer care outcomes at both the national and local level.
The Penrose Cancer Center is part of the statewide Centura Health Cancer Network, which offers an integrative approach to fighting cancer by bringing together conventional tools such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and immunotherapy with complementary therapies including nutritional support, mind-body medicine, physical therapy, pain management and spiritual support. The statewide cancer network brings together the best and brightest minds in cancer care, armed with leading edge technologies and capabilities that offer a complete array of services, connecting patients with all types of cancers and blood disorders to the most advanced care available in Colorado.
