DENVER (November 2, 2009) – Centura Health recently received multiple national awards from HealthGrades and OCS HomeCare Elite™ - two leading health care data analysis agencies -recognizing its hospitals and operating entities for quality care and services.

HEALTHGRADES FACTS:

  • Studies recently issued by HealthGrades, the leading independent health care ratings organization, has found that four Centura Health hospitals – Penrose-St. Francis Health Services in Colorado Springs, Porter Adventist Hospital and St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver and St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City - were ranked in the top 15 percentile or better for quality care in life-saving services.
  • Analyzing patient outcomes from nearly 40 million Medicare hospitalization records, HealthGrades Twelfth Annual Hospital Quality in America Study™ is the largest annual report of its kind.  The nation’s nearly 5,000 nonfederal hospitals were all included in the sweeping study, which examined mortality rates and complication rates from government data from 2006, 2007 and 2008.
  • Penrose-St. Francis Health Services is ranked number one in Colorado for overall critical care services.  In addition, Penrose-St. Francis is among the top five percent in the nation for pulmonary, gastrointestinal medical treatment and critical care.  As a result, Penrose-St. Francis received the HealthGrades 2010 Pulmonary Care and Critical Care Excellence Awards™. These awards are in addition to HealthGrades prestigious 2009 America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award™ placing Penrose-St. Francis in the top one percent of all hospitals in the nation for quality outcomes for the second year in a row.
  • Porter Adventist Hospital has been recognized for clinical quality excellence, demonstrating superior patient outcomes in multiple areas. Specifically, Porter Adventist is ranked number one in Colorado for Overall Cardiac Care, Coronary Interventional Procedures, and Cardiology Services.  In addition to being rated the best cardiac program in the state, Porter is a recipient of the Cardiac Care and Coronary Interventions Excellence Awards™, ranking the hospital among the top 10 percent and top 5 percent in the nation respectively, for both areas.
  • St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver has once again been recognized for outstanding quality of care outcomes as a recipient of the 2010 Stroke Care Excellence Award™, ranking as the number one Stroke Care Program in Colorado out of 38 rated programs and one of only two state hospitals to be ranked among the top five percent in the nation for stroke care for two years in a row (2009-2010).
  • St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City ranked third in Colorado for joint replacement surgery and rated among the top 15 percent in the nation from 2008 through 2010. St. Thomas More has consistently been among Colorado’s top performers in joint care receiving 5-Star ratings for three consecutive years. St. Thomas More has also been 5-star rated by HealthGrades four years in a row for hip fracture repair (2007-2010).

Top-performing hospitals had dramatically lower mortality rates than other hospitals, according to the study. For the 17 procedures and diagnoses for which HealthGrades analyzed mortality rates, patients at top hospitals had a 72 percent lower chance of dying when compared with the lowest-performing hospitals, and a 52 percent lower chance of dying when compared to the U.S. national average.
